What is the rationale behind accompanying a group of people with the groom when he goes to get his bride?

Please focus on the logic behind getting friends or a number of people with the groom to a specific place or bride's house for marriage.

i think its just to join in others happiness and give a message to others family that our family has a good standing in the society & people care for us.

I suppose it depends on the culture. In earlier times it was a show of force and support. A groom would bring his entourage so that no other could take his bride from him. In fact, the best man was the one to take his place if he could not complete the marriage himself.
