Finding the Perfect Mother of the Bride Dress

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Okay, the bride is the center of attention on the wedding day, but as her mother, you still want to do her proud and look great! Finding the perfect dress for the mother of the bride can sometimes feel even trickier than finding a gorgeous bridal gown, but if you keep a few things in mind, you will find something that makes you look and feel fantastic.

Most mothers of the bride cringe at the thought of wearing a traditional mother of the bride dress. "They are so matronly!", they cry, or, "I hate bugle beads and I look terrible in powder blue!". Never fear, ladies, just as wedding gowns have become more streamlined and fashion-forward over the last decade or so, the mother of the bride dresses have also become updated. Although you will still find plenty of frumpy, spangly outfits marketed for brides' mothers, you will also find dresses that are chic and flattering, in styles that you will be delighted to wear.

Now that you have (hopefully) gotten over your initial trepidation, it is time to start shopping! The first step is to ask the bride for her input. The mother of the bride's dress should match the formality and general flavor of what the bride and bridesmaids will be wearing. Notice I said general flavor, not the exact same color. Your dress should definitely not be the same color as the bride's (stay far away from white, ivory, and black), and it need not match the color of the bridesmaid dresses either. Do keep in mind, however, that you will be having many photos taken with the entire bridal party, so it would be a good idea to avoid a color that truly clashes with the color the bride has chosen for her attendants. You should also aim for a similar length dress as the bridesmaids will be wearing. If they are in floor length dresses, then your dress should also be full length. When the bridesmaids are wearing knee length dresses, the mother of the bride could go a little longer if it makes her more comfortable; tea length would be a good compromise.

Now on to style! One of the most popular types of mother of the bride ensembles is the two piece top and skirt set. This can be every bit as formal as a dress, but you will be able to order different sizes for the top and bottom, if need be. Petite mothers will often find it easier to get a good fit in separates, as well.

The other thing that many mothers of the brides look for is some sort of coverage for the upper arms. It is a rare woman who has a daughter old enough to be married who still likes the look of her triceps! There are many stylish ensembles with short, long, or three-quarter sleeves. Another great idea is to choose a sleeveless dress with a matching jacket, bolero, or wrap. This will give you more flexibility if the venue is too warm, and it will also be more comfortable for dancing as the evening goes on (after a few Champagne toasts, you may be more interested in being able to move your arms freely than you are worried about the shape of your arms!).

When you are choosing your mother of the bride ensemble, don't forget about your accessories. Just as the bride will have fabulous jewelry to complete her look, you will want some special wedding jewelry as well. For an evening wedding, the glamour of crystal jewelry will add the perfect touch of elegance; daytime affairs are the perfect time to wear a gorgeous strand of pearls. Black and white pearls used together is one of the most sophisticated looks.

With a little planning and an early start, you will find that it is not so daunting to find the perfect mother of the bride outfit. And make sure that even with all the excitement of helping your daughter prepare for her big day that you invest a little time in making yourself look and feel your best. After all, it is the bride's big day, but as her mother, you will be a very special part of it.

June Brides

Image : http://www.flickr.com

June is upon us, and that means it is wedding season. In the United States, June is the most popular month for weddings (in case you are curious, the least popular is January). There are a number of reasons why June is so frequently chosen for weddings, ranging from weather to custom to some surprising practicalities.

The weather in June is certainly one of its' most appealing aspects. It is a time of year when it is reliably warm in the North, but not blazingly hot yet in the South. However, the heritage of June weddings is much older than this country, dating back at least to the Romans. The month of June was named for Juno, the Roman goddess of marriage, hearth, and home. It was only natural that a couple would want to start their life together under her protection.

A funny and practical reason for the popularity of June weddings was that back when bathing was infrequent, people took their annual bath in May (yes, I did say annual!). You may wonder why May did not become the leading month for weddings, what with everyone being at their freshest then. May has long been considered to be an unlucky month for marriages, in part because it was the month when the Romans held the Feast of the Dead as well as the Festival of the Goddess of Chastity. Apparently, very few people felt that death or chastity were auspicious omens for their marriages. In fact, there is even an old saying, "Marry in May, rue the day!"

There are many beautiful flowers in bloom in June, with roses being chief among them. Brides have always loved roses, and they come in an incredible array of shapes, sizes, and colors. From the tiniest minature rose to the lushest grand floribunda, there is a rose that is right for almost every taste. They also hold up well in heat and humidity, which makes them a practical choice for a summer wedding. Other wonderful flowers for June bouquets include hydrangea, peonies, lavender, and lisianthus. If you select flowers than are in season, they will be more affordable and more spectacular.

Pearl bridal jewelry has always gone hand in hand with June weddings. For one thing, the pearl is the June birthstone. In addition, there is an ancient belief that if a bride wears pearls on her wedding day, she will shed fewer tears during the marriage. Pearl bridal jewelry has been worn by many famous brides, including Queen Elizabeth II and Jacqueline Kennedy, which adds to the appeal. Brides married at any time of the year love pearls for their lustrous glow and soft radiance. Like roses, pearls are available in many shapes, sizes, and colors. There is the classic round white akoya pearl, the gray baroque pearl, and even unique and informal keshi or coin pearls. With so many variations, there is pearl bridal jewelry perfect for every bride's style.

In celebration of the season, offer your guests the freshest seasonal delicacies at your June wedding. Some of the summer's best flavors include ripe berries, asparagus, sweet corn, zucchini, melon, and tomatoes. Dishes should be light and tasty; avoid heavy sauces and creamy soups. Also keep the weather in mind if your reception will be outdoors. Buttercream frosting will melt and run in the heat, but fondant will hold up beautifully. And don't forget to choose a refreshing signature drink, garnished with fresh fruit.

There are many wonderful reasons to have a June wedding. The weather is lovely, the flowers are abundant, and delicious food is in season. Other reasons to choose June for your special day range from the nostalgic (your mother was a June bride) to the sartorial (you have always imagined floating down the aisle in a chiffon gown). Perhaps you simply like the idea of the goddess Juno smiling down on your wedding day, bringing her blessings to your new life as husband and wife.

Finding Exquisite Mother of the Bride Formalwear Just Got Easier

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Mother of the Bride formal wear can be the most difficult type of formalwear to find. Working in the formalwear business for over 20 years we have had the opportunity of purchasing and selling formal wear for all occasions. We have never had a problem finding beautiful dresses and gowns for proms, bridesmaids, brides, and for any other special occasion. But, when the opportunity came to offer Mother of the Bride dresses through our on-line store we found that it was not quite so easy to find garments that we would be proud to offer or be proud to wear. We really had to search for a line of dresses that would suit this occasion.

After much research we did find a line of formalwear offering exquisite Mother of the Bride dresses. We found Ursula of Switzerland. Ursula designs elegant Mother of the Bride dresses in long and short lengths and long formal pant suits for added comfort. Along with Mother of the Bride Dresses Ursula of Switzerland offers cocktail dresses and special occasion dresses in both solid color and printed chiffon.

In 1988 Ursula of Switzerland won the DEBI AWARD for distinguished excellence in the bridal industry - national recognition - specifically for special occasions. This accolade would be repeated in future years. Ursula's focus on Mother-of-the-Bride for the petite, missy and plus sized woman, has found her a winning niche in over 5000 better specialty stores.

Many, many hours of research went in to finding this wonderful line of formalwear in such a limited field. Hopefully, we can assist others in finding it with less effort and in a shorter time.

I am Sue Gray. I have worked in formalwear for over 20 years.

I am presently at http://www.formalwear-outlet.com We manufacture our own line of formalwear and can easily adapt our styles to satisfy any customer's needs.

Finding Great Plus Size Mother of the Bride Dresses

Image : http://www.flickr.com

If you're looking for some plus size mother of the bride dresses, no doubt you want to find something that is beautiful and classy and that flatters your figure, whatever your size. Being the mother of the bride is no time to feel frumpy or dowdy or uncomfortable in any way. But today, you're in luck. Many more department stores and bridal specialty stores are carrying plus size mother of the bride dresses, and they are paying as much attention to these dresses as they are all their other fashions and styles. But before you actually shop, let's take a look at some things you will need to remember when choosing the right dress for you.

Your Body Type and Shape

Regardless of what size you are, you have some very positive features about you. The key is knowing what they are so you can play up those while downplaying whatever figure flaws you think you have.

For example, you may be looking for plus size mother of the bride dresses because you're no longer the skinny peanut you once were, but you still have very shapely legs. Maybe your figure has very pleasing proportions. The trick is to play up those positive aspects of your figure. If you have long legs, you can opt for a long skirt with a modest slit. If you have good proportions, you can choose some plus size mother of the bride dresses that simply flatter you all over, without having to emphasize any one feature.

Of course, knowing your body type and shape means also being honest and realistic about what your figure is. Thinking that you can wear a size smaller than you really are or opting for sleeveless designs may not be the best thing for you. Sometimes women make the mistake of picking out plus size mother of the bride dresses that they think looks good on a hangar or in a magazine, without worrying about how they actually look when worn. You may want to instead opt for covering up some things rather than thinking you can still show off some things.

Shape of the Dresses and Silhouettes

There are some plus size mother of the bride dresses that have obviously been designed without anyone even really thinking of what plus size women want in clothing. Most prefer silhouettes and dress shapes that are going to make them look slimmer, not big and billowy skirts that just make them look bigger. This is another reason why it's important to try on any plus size mother of the bride dresses that you're looking at. The cut and the shape may just hit your figure in all the wrong places. Another woman that is taller than you or shorter than you or just built differently make look great in one of these cuts and shapes, but you need something that is right for your figure, not theirs.

Where to Shop

Obviously you want to keep in mind the bride's preferences when it comes to color and even the length of the dress, but remember that you can find perfectly appropriate plus size mother of the bride dresses at places that don't necessarily specialize in bridal wear. Your favorite boutique or retailer may have just the perfect cocktail dress or fancy suit that would work well; remember that you can dress up these outfits with a beautiful shawl or wrap. If you know how to sew or know someone that does, you can add a line of beads or crystals to the hem of a skirt or add a nice trim to a jacket or bodice.

The real key to shopping for plus size mother of the bride dresses is to start shopping early and to be sure to try on any of your choices. If you do this you're sure to find just the right dress for you.
