Fashion Etiquette For Mother of the Bride/Groom

The traditional fashion etiquette for ladies attending a wedding is that the Bride is supposed to be the best dressed. Right behind her are the Mothers of the Bride and Groom. But you must remember that this tradition began many years ago, before the general public had easy access to beautiful fashions, before it became customary to buy a new special dress for just about any occasion.

It used to be that ladies would attend a wedding in whatever nice dress they had and had worn before, and only the Bride, the Mother of the Bride and the Mother of the Groom would splurge on new, fancy outfits. The possibility that another lady in attendance would upstage the primary 3 ladies was remote, and because weddings have centered on the Bride for time immemorial, the Mother of the Groom was expected to defer to the Bride's Mother, and most of the time she did.

This is more or less how the whole tradition got started, and it's maintained itself to the present day. But, it is very difficult to follow this guideline with off-the-rack dresses for the Mothers of the Bride and Groom, due to the current custom of ladies taking every opportunity to dress nice, and in a new outfit--at least as far as weddings are concerned.

With so many of the other ladies getting dressed up for the occasion, about the only way left for the Mothers of the Bride and Groom to stand out from the crowd is to order a custom outfit from someone qualified to do 2 vitally important things. First, to design the outfit and craft it properly so that it both fits and flatters. And second, to be sure that the style and color chosen is a style and a color that will flatter the wearer, rather than clash with her.

Solving these 2 problems for you is one of our specialties.

But this happy occasion is also a milestone, a major accomplishment in the life of both the mother and the father of the bride or groom.

For you it's the culmination of the love you had when you were younger, of the goals you set out to achieve together, and of the accomplishment of one of the most precious goals in all of life--the beginning of the process that brings you your grand children. And WOW, YOU did it!

As the mother and father of the bride or groom you took everything that life threw at you. You ate it up and spit it out. You brought a beautiful young baby from girlhood to blushing bride, from boyhood to manhood, and you did it together, and you did it with love.

This may be your child's wedding day, but it's much more to you and your husband. It's a day you celebrate what your own love created so many years ago, and on a day like this, it's only natural for you to remind your husband how strong his desire for you was all those years ago.

How do you do that? You find the perfect outfit, an outfit that breaks through the familiarity you've grown accustomed to with your husband, an outfit that sends him flashbacks of the times you had when you were younger. An outfit that projects to your guests the joy and happiness you are feeling as they celebrate your child's wedding with you.

For this kind of moment, the outrageous stylings from today's department stores simply won't do. For this special event, what's called for is the look of Classic Elegance. A look that consists of a little bit of romance, a little bit of formality, and a little bit of decorum. When you stand at the receiving line, you will project confidence and elegance.

This is the style of mother of the bride or groom outfits we've been creating in my shop since 1971, a style that will never go out of style. A style that says, "WE did it, celebrate with us, but know this too--our life isn't over yet, not by a long shot."

Our mothers of the bride or groom outfits start at $900.00, and go up from there. Your imagination is the only limit when it comes to a maximum price, but most of our customers get the outfit they want at the minimum price, or slightly more. It will all depend on how conservative or how showy you want to be--the decision is all yours. Showy is more expensive, but we can help you with the right recommendations to keep the cost down, if budgeting is a consideration.

If budgeting is not a consideration, and you want to indulge yourself and splurge for one of the biggest days of your life, we can create for you the outfit of your dreams.
