Things to Think About When Creating a Father of the Bride Speech

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Wow, I have two daughters and even though I do not feel as though I have a huge problem with speaking in public, I definitely dread this speech. Not because I think I will feel as though I am losing one of my daughters or anything, I just think it will be an emotional time for me.

With that being said, I think others do as well. I could sit here and tell you what you should write, but then it would not be heart felt. So instead I will just give my thoughts to you on how I think I will be approaching this situation.

First off, everyone is going expect me to be emotional. I probably will be and for that reason, I think it is probably best to try and keep it short. Also, I tend to think that it is the responsibilities of the Best Man and Maid of Honor to deliver the childhood stories. Not it is simply inappropriate, but I am just making the point that it probably is not necessary.

With that said, I personally do feel that I will be approaching this with a sincere heart from the beginning. I don't believe that after other speeches have been given that will likely have humorous content that I would need to bring additional jokes to lighten up the mood.

Another thing to think about is that you should always put something nice about the groom in there as well. Everyone already knows that you hope that your daughter is treated well by him, so there is no need to be Mr. Tough Dad and try to put threats in your speech. I think saying a few nice kind words about him is always appropriate.

Just remember, there is nothing wrong with keep this speech short. In fact, it is probably expected by most of the people listening in on what you are saying.

The Cure for Bridezillas and Runaway Brides

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Wedding stress! No wonder we have bridezillas and runaway brides!

Remember this runaway bride?

Instead of a white veil, she wore a blanket over her head. Instead of her father escorting her down the church aisle in Duluth, Georgia, the Albuquerque police led her through the airport terminal. We've all seen the story about runaway bride Jennifer Wilbanks. The 32 year-old flee-ancee as some are calling her, took extreme measures in an attempt to deal with a common problem of the engaged - getting cold feet. Now her cold feet have her in hot water.

I'm no psychologist & won't attempt an explanation of Wilbank's behavior. Maybe it was just the stress of it all. Getting married does score 50 on the Holmes-Rahe stress scale. That's half the amount of stress from the death of a loved one! So it was either run, or for others become a bridezilla. What could Jennifer Wilbanks have done, or for that matter what can any bride do in dealing with the stress of a wedding?

Here are a few ideas:

Talk to somebody about what's stressing you

Stress is normal and can come at the bride from many directions. She discovers that there are a zillion details to planning a wedding. She finds many helpful family & friends giving her contradictory advice on what to do. She feels the pressure to be happy all the time - after all this is her wedding & she is the center of attention. Many Southern brides face what is called "the Southern Cotillion Syndrome - the expectation of perfection.

Often brides & grooms are finishing a degree, buying a house, starting a new job, & getting married all within a few months span! So let it out! Talk to someone you can confide in: a friend, family member, a minister, or a licensed counselor.

Get good help in planning & conducting your wedding.

I've never known a bride to regret hiring a good wedding coordinator. That initial decision can make all the difference in either feeling that you survived your wedding or that you actually enjoyed it. An experienced coordinator can direct the bride to other quality people who will take much of the potential stress out of your wedding. Get the wrong people & they will cause more stress!

    Take care of yourself.

To handle stress well you must be strong in mind and body. Mom is right. Eat your fruits & vegetables. And remember to exercise regularly and get enough sleep. All basic stuff that's easy to let slide because you're so busy. It's important to take breaks from planning your wedding. Go out to eat. Go to a movie. Go to the park. Don't go to Vegas on a Greyhound Bus!

    Keep your perspective

Keep telling yourself what it's all about. You don't have to be perfect, and your wedding doesn't have to be perfect. Of course, you want things to go well. Do what you can to make your wedding the celebration you want it to be. But realize that some little something may not go just right. I'm not even sure that's it's a good idea to have a perfect wedding. After all, your marriage won't be perfect either. And guess what? If it was somebody else's wedding, they'd do something different from what you are doing. Good! When it's their wedding, let 'em have at it.

Remember: when it's all said and done, at the end of the day you'll be married and your adventure together begins. That's what it's all about.

    Seek pre-marital counseling

It's amazing that many of the books & websites that claim to have comprehensive information for the wedding couple, have little or nothing about premarital counseling. Premarital counseling doesn't solve all your problems once and for all. Nor does it iron out all your differences. It can reduce the number of surprises once you're married.

A good counselor will help you see your strengths as a couple and that's a confidence builder. A good counselor will also help you look at your differences & teach you skills for working through them effectively. Again, a real confidence builder. Don't get so busy planning your wedding that you don't have time to plan your marriage.

There is a Free Multi-Media Online Marriage Preparation Course that you can do on your own. Even the guys love this marriage preparation course. You can use it in addition to other resources you are using or as stand-alone marriage preparation.

Keep these tips in mind and you can manage your wedding stress, and not have to worry about becoming a bridezilla or runaway bride.

Choosing a Mother of the Bride Dress For 2009

    Image : http://www.flickr.com

This year turning Mom into the Mother of the Bride comes with one important prerequisite. Talk to the bride. She'll appreciate you listening to her input for years to come. Don't be afraid of this exercise - there are plenty of color and style options to accommodate not only your look but her preferences as well this year. You might even be pleasantly surprised with what you discover and relieved to have a place to start. But don't start shopping yet. Next consider the key attributes of color, length, style and body, which when combined successfully will ensure you and your dress are a spectacular hit on the bride's big day.

    Color

The two aspects of color that you want to reconcile are simply 1) the color theme of the wedding and 2) the colors that looks good on you. En vogue dress colors especially for Mother of the Brides this year (and especially for outdoor weddings) include "apricot, peach, lemon and golden olive hues" reports Hanna of Here Comes the Guide. If the wedding is taking place later in the year, get more vivid with amethyst, mahogany, or rose. If none of these colors will do, then take your queue from the bride, who may elect to step into 2009's trend for lots of bold, saturated colors like green, lavender or blue, but especially blue, with all of its brilliant peacock splendor including deep violet blue, clear bright blue, green blue, cobalt blue, turquoise, and palace blue. If the bride's theme is blue, but blue doesn't work on you, trying choosing from among the many delightful accent colors you will see in a wedding regardless of its color theme, like champagne, cream, bone, taupe, tan, silver, shimmering light gold, or beige

Selecting colors around a wedding's theme is only the first step. Ask also what colors look good on you. If you are unsure, it's best to keep two or three neutral colors in mind while you decide what looks best against your natural coloring. As you shop, hold clothing items of differing colors up to your face and judge for yourself. You can even go so far as to invest in a professional style guide, like the ones available at istylista. When you look back on wedding photos years from now, you will not regret the investment!

In all cases, stay away from white, ivory, and black. And interestingly, even though blue is "in" this year, one of its shades definitely is not - navy. Don't be caught wearing it! Just remember to pick a color that coordinates well with the wedding theme or its bridal attendants - you don't have to match exactly! - and one which looks great on you at the same time.

    Length

The Mother of the Bride's dress length should be similar to the bridesmaids' dresses, within Mom's comfort zone. Tea length (a gown hemmed to end at the shin) becomes an acceptable compromise when bridesmaids' dresses measure LA knee length or shorter.

    Style

Continuing the trend from last year, stores are stocking Mother of the Bride dresses in youthful styles. No more stodgy lines and drab tones. This is Mom's year for satisfying a little chicly red carpet fantasy of her own! Take your queue from designing leaders like Karen Miller, Scala, Ursula and Cachet. Also look to bride styles for inspiration, who will be more angelic this year in soft fabrics like chiffons and drapings. But don't go overboard. You'll be safe in simple, graceful lines with little frill and appropriate accessories which compliment, rather than compete with, the bride's wedding dress. A perennial favorite for Mom, especially petite moms, is the two piece skirt suit. These separates are popular because each piece can be ordered in different sizes for a more tailored fit.

    Your Body

Be comfortable in your own skin, and in your dress. This means understanding your body shape, your natural colors, owning your age, and putting a dash of your personality into your ensemble. iStylista has an excellent blog article on this topic which you don't want to miss.

Tasteful Bridal Jewelry For Older Brides

    Image : http://www.flickr.com

The average age for an American bride is about 25 years old. For women who are a bit older than that (or even quite a bit older), they will want to take a few things into consideration when choosing their bridal jewelry. Instead of wearing the type of jewelry that a young ingenue would, an older bride should look for pieces that suit her age and level of sophistication.

Perhaps you have seen so many beautiful pieces of bridal jewelry, and simply do not know what is appropriate or where to begin. It will be much easier once you have selected your gown or bridal ensemble. Then you can match the formality of the jewelry to what you will be wearing on your special day.

Brides who are a little older will find that certain styles of bridal jewelry will suit them and that others will look too young. This will have less to do with whether you are a first time bride or not; it is really a question of finding pieces that are elegant and sophisticated. There are a few styles, in particular, that a mature woman should avoid.

It is often the hair jewelry that poses the great pitfalls for an older bride. There are some types of headpieces that will work beautifully for a bride of any age, but others that will not. Tiaras, specifically, are best left to the younger set. Unless you are real royalty, skip the crown, and opt for a more chic look like a scattering of hairpins.

Other types of jewelry will depend on your own style and figure. For example, a woman who has, shall we say, a "mature" neck, should stay away from chokers, as they will emphasize any wrinkles or looseness that may be present. It is still possible to wear a short necklace; just do not choose one that clings too tightly to the neck.

On the other hand, there may be some styles that you are unaccustomed to wearing that could work beautifully. Many women, as they grow older, tend to get more conservative in their fashion choices. Your wedding might be the perfect time to break away from what you wear every day and try something more adventurous, like a great pair of drop earrings.

One of the nicest things about being an older bride is that you likely know your own taste and sensibilities. This will prove very helpful when it comes time to choose your wedding gown and jewelry. You may want to consider having your bridal jewelry custom made so that you can get exactly what you want. If you find a designer who handcrafts custom bridal jewelry from Swarovski crystals and freshwater pearls, it can be surprisingly affordable.

There are so many wonderful options when it comes to wedding jewelry, which means that there is a perfect set for every bride. When you are an older bride, make sure that the bridal jewelry you select really makes you shine. Knowing that your jewelry looks great will help you to feel even lovelier on your wedding day.

    A Guide to Unity Symbols

    Image : http://www.flickr.com

A marriage is ultimately symbolizes a strong bond being formed between two people. On top of this it also marks the coming together of two families. To celebrate this, some people choose to incorporate special rituals into their wedding ceremony that represent the union. Here is a look at a few commonly used symbols of unity.

Perhaps the most widely used item is a unity candle, the lighting of which is use to signify the matrimonial bond. The bride and the groom will both usually light an individual candle of their own, then holding theirs in one of their hands, use them to simultaneously light a third. Often the mothers from each family will initiate the process by light the candles the bride and groom hold. Sometimes the candles are blown out, but more often than not they will remain lit for the ceremony in its entirety.

Another option may be to use a unity cup. In this case, each family fills it own cup with something, usually red wine, and then the bride and the groom pour half from each cup into a third cup and then each proceed to drink from it. The half empty family cups stand for the uniqueness of each family while the full third cup signifies the marital connection. Again the parents could be involved by filling the family cups to begin with.

A newer tradition is for the groom to deliver a rose to the bride who will bring a vase for it to the ceremony. When the two are combined together it serves as a representation of their unison in marriage.

While these symbols are not a requirement for weddings but they can serve to make your ceremony a more spiritual experience. They can also be an excellent way to involve your family. You might even want to make your own, by drawing from something personal to you such as your culture or heritage.

Become a Top Wedding Planner - Don't Become a Victim of These 5 Deceitful Business Practices

    Image : http://www.flickr.com

Wedding planners and other wedding vendors are often targets for unscrupulous business practices.

Here are 5 situations you need to be aware of and avoid:

    1) A bride and groom from another country emails you asking you to be their wedding planner

The email tells you they found you on the Internet, were very impressed and want to hire to you to plan their wedding when they move into your area to start a job or go to school. They offer to send you a cashier's check for more than the amount of your fee and ask you to pay another vendor with the extra money. Most people assume that all cashier's checks are good but that is not true. Also, these checks actually could take weeks to clear, beyond the time in which you would need to pay their "vendor." Do not accept cashier's checks and never accept checks with large amounts of extra money that you need to pay to someone else.

    2) You get an email or phone call saying you have been voted "The Best Wedding Planner in Your City"

I once received an email telling me I won an award and offering to sell me a $200 plaque to for my office. The company was selling plaques! Another time someone offered to sell me an advertising opportunity in a magazine so I could tell people about the award they gave to me. Do not be tricked by these fake awards.

    3) An official-sounding business bureau calls to say people are asking about your business

A representative from a company who says they investigate consumer complaints says someone has inquired about your business, wanting to know if there had been any complaints against you. They, of course, are not able to share the details. But if you want their support against complaints in the future, you can purchase an annual membership for a few hundred dollars.

    4) Wedding and event planning schools tell you that you are the perfect candidate

You fill out an online questionnaire to see if you would make a good wedding planner and the school that posts the form tells you that you would be perfect, just sign up for their certification course. You do not need a certification to become a wedding planner. If you decide you want to take an online course, make sure you know what you are getting for your money. Many schools are very expensive and don't offer personal contact, have few training materials, don't have trained instructors and are not available for questions. Ask for references and check the Internet for comments about any schools you are considering before you enroll.

    5) An online event referral directory emails you and says people are looking for more information about your business

They say you could be getting referrals but they don't have full information about your business so they are turning people away. In order to get a referrals and a full listing, you need to become a paying member of their site.

If you get requests from potential clients that sound unusual or are offered business opportunities that ask you for money, do some research before you proceed. Check the Internet to see if others have encountered similar situations. Also, always trust your gut. If you feel the offer could be dishonest, it probably is.

Bridal Gown - A Major Decision For All Brides To Be

    Image : http://www.flickr.com

Every beautiful Bride will need accessories such as wedding favors for the wedding reception celebration. Her Wedding Favors offers the best selection of elegant favors at prices you can afford.

Bridal gowns are a major decision for every bride-to-be. Choosing the right bridal gown is a major decision for every bride-to-be. Every bride wants to feel comfortable and look their best when they walk down the aisle. And all of the wedding planning and preparation will likely be for not if the bride is not happy with her bridal gown choice.

With the Internet, many brides-to-be usually use the online experience as a first step or brief glimpse into the world of wedding gowns. They may see some patterns and ideas they like online, check out some wedding magazines and then head to a local store to be properly fitted for their bridal gown. Most brides-to-be don't spring for a bridal gown they like online. This would not be a good move, as certain gowns may look better on certain body types than others. And usually a bride-to-be will learn pretty quickly, which patterns and styles of gowns do not work with their body type.

Getting fit properly is also key to the experience of getting the right bridal gown. Having a professional do the alterations is very important. Before going with a bridal store and tailor, one may want to check references. Even better if you know a friend who has worked with the company or individual who may be selling the bridal gown, this reference could prove to be valuable. On the Internet, there are even message boards for brides and brides-to-be allowing for dialogue to happen between women about companies and services.

Bridal gowns are like any other part of the wedding planning. Price and needs should always be taken into consideration. Another thing to consider doing when shopping for the perfect bridal gown is to attend wedding shows, where makers show off their latest styles. The Internet has listings of shows that happen year round.

Finding and buying a bridal gown can be a wonderful but challenging experience. That's why it may help to know what kinds of shopping environments work for you. For some cost conscious brides it is imperative to get the best deal on a bridal gown. So they may go to a large chain and deal with lines or maybe a lack of individual attention. For others, they may be willing to spend a little bit more in a small boutique shop to get the personalized attention. With the Internet and also the wide range of shops trying to cater to a bride's every need, there is a shopping experience for every type of bride looking for the perfect bridal gown.

Finally, shopping for a bridal gown can be fun too. Even though brides get stressed about finding the perfect one, the experience can also be a time to share laughs with good friends who are willing to help the bride out and to offer some great bonding moments for the bridal party.

    Bridal Party Introduction Songs

    Image : http://www.flickr.com

Music plays an important role in any wedding ceremony, especially from the point where the bride enters, right up to the moment when she and her groom are declared as man and wife. Traditionally, the groom is initially made to stand at the end of the aisle by the bishop. The bridal party is then allowed to enter through the doors, including the bride. The introduction of the bridal party is generally accompanied by a sudden shift in the music that is being played to what are referred to as the bridal party introduction songs. The selected song is played from the moment the bridal party begins to enter and is played till the point of time when the bride finally reaches her destination down the aisle.

The wedding party does not merely consist of the bridesmaids, the best man, the ring bearer and the bride. The family of the bride, especially her parents, is also considered as part of the wedding party. The bridal party, on the other hand, consists of the bridesmaids accompanied by the maid of honor. The maid of honor is also called the matron of honor. It is customary for the bridal party to enter just after the selected number from the bridal party introduction songs has started playing.

Weddings today are heterogeneous. According to the kind of atmosphere that a wedding ceremony bears, the bridal party introduction songs can also be different for different weddings. Traditional weddings tend to employ the traditional tune of "Here Comes the Bride". Stylish and modern weddings often employ more easygoing tunes from different genres of music. It is interesting to note that even casual party musical numbers are occasionally used as bridal party introduction songs nowadays. Some prefer romantic tunes, while others are more inclined towards playing light, hip-hop tunes.

Selecting proper bridal party introduction songs can be difficult. A number of web sites have alleviated this problem to a certain extent by providing lists of suggested tunes that can be played as bridal party introduction songs. One must choose a song carefully, for a wrong selection can destroy the entire atmosphere of a wedding.

It is said that every single aspect of a wedding can contribute significantly to the remembrance of those fond memories in the future. This is true even for bridal party introduction songs. Hearing a song that had been played during one's wedding ceremony can revive the old passion years later. After all, what can touch the human heart more deeply than music?

    Veil Alternatives For Brides

    Image : http://www.flickr.com

The traditional image of a bride is a woman in a long white dress with an equally long flowing veil. Some women, though, do not want to wear a veil for their wedding, and yet a bridal gown is really not complete without something in the bride's hair. Luckily, there are many beautiful alternatives to a veil.

There can be a variety of reasons why a bride would not choose to wear a veil. She might think that it is too much for an informal wedding, or she might think a veil is inappropriate if she is a second time bride. Some brides just feel silly with a long piece of tulle draped from their heads. Whatever the reason for not wearing a veil, you will want to find a different option to finish off your look while still suiting your style and situation.

One alternative to wearing a veil is to wear a hat. At outdoor garden weddings, you sometimes see the bride wearing a large portrait style hat adorned with silk or fresh flowers. This is a particularly nice option for an informal wedding where the bride is wearing a very simple dress, perhaps with a touch of subtle handmade wedding jewelry. It makes for a very genteel look.

Hats can go to the other extreme, as well. An avant garde bride could wear an edgy one-of-a-kind hat, perhaps in a color other than white. Such hats can be adorned with feathers, bits of tulle, or anything else that catches your fancy. Yet another style of bridal hat is a small pillbox with a piece of open-weave netting. This look is both retro and chic at the same time. It would be ideal with a wedding suit or tailored sheath dress.

If hats are not your thing, there are many other types of adornments that a bride can choose. Ditching the veil does not have to mean forgoing a tiara, if you like the princess bride look. Tiaras can be large and ornate, covered in rhinestones and Swarovski crystals, or they can be delicate and airy, with more of an emphasis on pearls. You will want to make sure that they match the general style of your handmade wedding jewelry, so if your overall look is more glitzy, choose a crystal tiara, or if you are wearing pearl bridal jewelry, then a pearl headpiece is the right choice for you.

Not every bride feels that a tiara is right for either her taste or her wedding. A big crown is rarely a good idea on an older bride, or one who is being remarried. Those brides should seek more subtle and sophisticated hair jewelry. A very wearable option is hairpins. They can be tucked into any type of updo, from an elaborate wreath of curls to the most classic chignon. The nice thing about hairpins is that they give your hairstylist some flexibility; she can place them individually throughout your hair, or cluster them together for a more dramatic effect. If you are only pulling back the sides of your hair, then a decorative comb could be used in place of hairpins.

The final alternative to a veil is wearing fresh flowers in your hair. The most elegant way to do it is to tuck one large flower into the side of a hairstyle. Leave the floral wreaths for the flower girls. There are a few things to consider about fresh flowers; they will usually wilt over the course of the day, and there are limited options for blooms that will work. If you decide to go this route, keep a spare flower or two in water so that you can switch it out as needed.

Brides today worry less about doing what is conventional. They are more interested in expressing their personalities and being true to themselves. If you decide that a veil is not right for you, there are many other stylish alternatives.
