A Guide to Wedding Expenses - Who Pays For What?

As a bride, you envision your dream wedding with every detail you imagined. Along with those details comes a price. Traditionally the bride's family pays for the majority of the wedding but now the groom's family is helping out with the costs. Traditional roles in wedding expenses are beginning to fade away as we become more modern as a society.

Many couples are getting married later in age and are already established in their careers and find it inappropriate to have their parents pay for their wedding and instead are responsible for the costs themselves. Some couples decide on a budget and go to each of their families to see how much they will contribute and either readjust their budget based on that or find creative ways to pay for what their families cannot pay for.

If a traditional division of expenses is right for you below are the various expenses each family should pay for:

The Bride and Her Family:

  • Invitations and announcements

  • Wedding dress and accessories

  • Flowers for ceremony and reception, bridesmaid's flowers, bride's bouquet

  • Photographer/videographer for wedding

  • Music for church and reception

  • Transportation

  • All expenses of reception

  • Groom's wedding ring

  • Fee for services performed by sexton

Expenses of the Groom and his Family:

  • Bride's engagement and wedding rings

  • Present to his bride

  • Boutonnieres for groom's attendants

  • Bride's corsage

  • Marriage license

  • Honeymoon expenses

  • Rehearsal dinner expenses

  • Bachelor dinner

This list include some of the basic expenses when planning a wedding. Depending on how simple or elaborate your wedding may be, there could be more or less costs than the ones listed. As mentioned above, it is best to come up with your available budget and then work backwards to determine how much you will be able to spend on each item.

For more help, use this wedding expenses calculator which will help you configure the average amount to spend on each cost for your wedding. It will help you so you do not spend more than you need to for each item.
