Diamond wedding rings represent the most precious of bonds, that of the bond between a man and a woman. Regardless of the exchange of wealth or not the ring still represents the same thing, intent to be united for life. This ring should represent how precious that is and this is one of the reasons that the most precious gem on earth is so often added to the wedding band.
The diamond wedding ring is such an important part of the relationship that many major religions mention it during the ceremony, including Christianity and Judaism. The Jewish religions states as sharing the ring, "with this ring you are consecrated to me according to the Law of Moses and Israel". The Christian commitment varies slightly from one form of Christianity to the other but they all basically share something along the lines of the following "Take this ring as a sign of my love and fidelity".
The importance of the ring is easy to see, however the selection of the ring should be equally as important. While in many cases the bride does not see the engagement ring before it is given to her, this is not true of the wedding bands. The tradition is for the bride and groom to shop together for these rings. After all not only are these signs of a commitment but they are also a decorative piece of jewelry that needs to reflect the personality of the couple and particularly the bride.
