What is the rule on dressing better than the bride?

I'm not in the wedding party. The people getting married are very casual and have this thing against dressing up (I call it lack of maturity). I know it will be a very casual wedding but I love to dress up and dont mind if I am the only one. For me, that is part of the fun of going to weddings.

Would it be OK for me to dress up, even if I end up looking more formal than the bride?

Don't dress up, you should not out shine the bride.

Don't dress up if its a casual wedding. There are plenty of casual dresses that look good. Don't be the stick in the mud that has to be proper all the time, especially when the ones who's paying asked for it to be a certain way.

Just because you don't see the point in a casual wedding doesn't mean that you should come dressy. There is a first time for everything so chalk this up as a the first time you attended a causal wedding or don't attend at all.

To be honest, and not trying to be a b**** But the wedding isn't about what your think is mature, or not. That is "their" special day, the ONE day that if they ask everyone to come casual, dressy, etc. that people should do their best to follow it. I'm not saying that you should kiss their a** and be totally uncomfortable. I'm just saying, don't purposely dress so formal that you outshine the bride....that would not only be inappropriate, it would be hatefull of you. You can still look nice in casual clothes. Wear some jeans, a really nice top, and heels...thats dressy/casual.

Unfortunately, it really doesn't matter how you feel about casual weddings. I think it is proper to dress for the occasion...if the occasion is a casual wedding, then that means you should dress casually. You can always wear a simple dress in a casual fabric (or a skirt and sweater if it is cold). Even if everyone else is in jeans, it would not be inappropriate to wear a skirt if that makes you feel more comfortable. However, it would be somewhat rude and tacky (not to mention impractical) to wear an evening gown or a cocktail dress to an afternoon wedding followed by a picnic. =)

You are being a much better friend by following your friend's wishes...if you do not care about their feelings enough to do so, then I don't see why you would attend their wedding.

(As an aside, it is perfectly fine to wear black to weddings these days. In fact, a black dress is the outfit of choice at most of the weddings I have been to in the last few years).

if you don't see the point of a casual wedding and cannot muster up the courage to downplay your outfit, then maybe you should rethink attending at all. You were invited because someone wanted you there, not to outshine the bride. Just wear an outfit you already have and would possibly wear to work (if you dress business attire for work) Then you will still be dressed up in a sense but not wearing a formal outfit.

You should dress casually if that is the wedding theme. This isn't about you and what you want. It would be rude if you were to flagrantly dismiss their request for a casual wedding by dressing formally. And all the whispers behind your back wouldn't be compliments on your attire I can assure you. But rather, your obvious and blatant disregard for the couples decision on the type of wedding they want.

It's rude. It's NOT your day, dear, its the bride's. You have dozens and dozens of weddings coming up in your future. Take the "casual wedding" rule the same way you would take a "formal wedding" rule. You would never wear jeans and a T shirt to a formal wedding, so you shouldn't wear a gown to a casual wedding.

Nobody will ever say you're dressed better than the bride (even if you are), because she is kind of the star of the event and the one that everyone will be saying looks ravishing, no matter if she is wearing jeans or whatever.... I agree, it's horrible to think that on the most special day of one's life that one wouldn't bother to dress up. However, you should dress appropriate to the occassion, and if they ask that you not dress up, just wear a cute daytime dress anyway. The bride is still supposed to get more attention, even if she doesn't dress for it.

the only things that are taboo are wearing white, as though you were competing with the bride for attention (this only gains you pitiful looks) and wearing ALL black, which indicates disdain for the occasion and mourning. Wearing black accents is okay though.

The rule is simple: don't do it. They have invited you to THEIR wedding; it is their day, their way. If you "don't see the point" of how they want to have their wedding, then why are you going? It's one day, it won't kill you.

Best regards,

Holly

PS - casual dressing isn't necessarily a lack of maturity ... but wanting to dress "better" than the bride can certainly be seen that way.

Well, you got two choices, go by the rules and dress casual, or not and dress formal...but if you dont dress casual, yea you will attract a bunch of attention. The wrong kind! I would personally see you as someone who tried toooo hard, and how stupid you look, either that or "she didn't get the memo" Not "OMG she looks better than the bride!" Don't worry about it, you'll be a bride one day...when someone else is trying to outdress you........

I think you should dress appropriately for the event. If the bride is wearing torn jeans, a tee shirt and flip flops, you can wear decent jeans, a button down and real shoes, but you shouldn't show up in a cocktail dress. Just how casual of a wedding are you talking about?

Dress as you normally would if you were going out to dinner or something. Don't go over the top and try to be the center of attention, that is the whole point. Just keep it simple and don't go overboard with your hair, jewelry, or makeup. Just look nice but don't try to turn heads, try to fit in a little.

Sure but you arent' going to get the looks you want, not like the bride will, why would you go and do something like this? What happens if you get married and somebody comes in looking better than you ? Yes, it can happen. You should not even be asking this.

If you dress up at a casual wedding you will be the center of attention which is not your place; dress casually.

and you say that they lack maturity?

Don't do it.
